Blacksmithing is the art of mastering metal in order to create objects. Farriers are blacksmiths dedicated to the horses. Farriery requires knowledge and skills to provide proper equine hoof care. Hoof care is essential for the horses' health because "No hoof, no horse". Farriers will study the anatomy of the horse, its morphology, pathologies, physiological needs and what is expectated of him in order to maintain the health, treat diseases or prevent from injuries with the adequate trimming and shoeing.

With thousands years of history, farriery has been a valued profession worldwide. The European farriery evolved along the domestication and use of horses, with major events from the Roman Empire to the Industrialisation era (19th Century). Nowadays, the horses are used for leisure and are considered as sport athlete. With regards to the sport and the new technologies, the profession as well as the whole equestrian industry continue to progress.

HEALTH FORUM DAY

The meeting of sciences and field practice

From conferences to demonstration, this day is dedicated to the horse's health with national and international speakers presenting common injuries and pathologies of the sport horses. The cooperation of the specialists from 4 fields (farriery, veterinary, osteopathy and dentistry) is a valuable holistic approach to deeply understand the horse in order to improve its health.

In this class, farriers have only 1 minute to study the model-shoe to then recreate it from memory.

Dear farriers, 

At Kiji Consulting, we have strived to share our knowledge through an holistic approach for your profession to be recognised at its deserved rank. 

This competition is and must remain a friendly and pedagogical event, an opportunity for each of you to assess of your current knowledge and skills. Because sciences, technologies and our comprehension of horses constantly progress, we shall continue to learn and share.

To ensure that this event is safe for you as well as for the horse, and to implement a homogeneous level amongts the competitors, farriers wishing to take part in the competition are required to fill the application process. Based on the requirements you will find below, the jury will select 20 farriers to compete.

The applications will not be released publically. Kiji Team is here to assist and support you throughout the application process, the training period and of course during and after the competition. 

We look forward to see hammers hitting anvils, good luck to everyone!

Create 2 shoes from plain steel 25x8mm:

  • 1 clip fullered front 

  • 1 clip stamped back 

 

13:00 - 15:00 Therapeutic Forge Class

Create 2 asymetrical shoes from plain steel 25x8mm:

  • 1 clip covered toe front

  • 1 massellotte covered outside branch back

 

16:00 - 17:30 Shoeing Class 

Trimming and shoeing from mecanical shoes (Diagonal Front + Back)

Sunday 22nd

9:00 - 11:00 Eagle Eye

Reproduce a shoe based on a quoted model. From plain steel 25x8mm

1 minute to observe

30 minutes to rest

1 heure et 29 minutes to create

Application

APPLICATION PROCESS

Important notice :

  • 288rmb participation fee per participant

  • The ticket to the forum is offered to all participants and their apprentice (1 apprentice per person)

  • The venue is opened to public and free to attend on Saturday and Sunday

  • Accommodation is not included

  • Food & resfreshment are not included

  • Farriers must compete with their own tools including forge and anvil

 

To propose a show with an homogenous level and to preserve the mental and physical health of the horses, we will select the 20 best farriers.

How to apply

Official registration from 15th to 31st July 2024

  1. Take a picture of your work: shoeing from front (zoom to see the shoeing from close)

  2. Take a picture of your work: picture of the shoeing from side

  3. Record a video of your forged shoe made from iron bar according to the given dimensions and requirements

How to be selected

After the annoucement of the competition the Organisational Committee and the Jury will publish the tutorial videos to answer both the pedagogical and technical aspect of the event. All the participants are strongly advised to practice based on the given advices and requirements.

How to win

  • Practice the given exercises at home.

  • Study the horse and its biomecanics.

  • Ask for advices

Equipment and tools will be the rewards for all the classes. The final class will determinate the winner of the whole competition. Do remember, a farriery competition is not all about winning. It’s also about evaluating one’s level, learning about each other and improvement.

First farriery competition organised in China with an international jury and teams, the main goal is about pedagogy and studying. Every year we offer training dedicated to local farriers to share anatomical, biomecanical and practical knowledge. The related case studies are discussed with farriers, osteopaths and dentists.

Once the knowledge is shared, solution must be created to actually obtain positive results. For that matter, quality tools, equipment, healthcare products are needed for the China market.
